Developing the future talent in our industry
23 May 2014
We are committed to enhancing the future employment prospects of the young people who live around our developments. Accordingly, an important aspect of our London Portfolio CR programme involves the creation of educational and employment programmes, which are facilitated by our Development and Property Teams.
In May, the two teams of students involved in our educational programme 'Introduction To Property Development' went head to head to pitch their respective masterplans for Nova in a Dragon’s Den style presentation. Both groups received high praise from the panel of judges who included 'Dragons' from Land Securities, PLP Architecture, Mace Group and Canada Pension Plan Investment Board. The judges eventually chose Pimlico Academy as the winners, awarding the winning pupils with a £50 iTunes voucher each.
The Introduction to Property Development Course was created in partnership with Construction Youth Trust. It was especially designed to give students from schools local to our Victoria developments a valuable insight into the work involved in property development and the different career options open to them.
Every fortnight for four months, 13 A-level students, from Westminster City School and Pimlico Academy have been meeting in separate groups with members of our London Property teams, who have volunteered their time to guide the students through the different areas of development including masterplanning, stakeholder engagement, finance and marketing.
Land Securities' volunteer feedback:
“It is critical to our role as landowners that we engage with not only those who are immediately affected during the development, but also those who could benefit from a greater understanding of the process”. Rob Jewell, Asset Manager
“I think the programme helps to deliver a true sense of the commercial world of property and the roles involved. This is achieved through providing pupils with external exposure to employees and real life examples of the day to day running of a high profile property development company, like Land Securities, rather than a school based classroom textbook approach.” Ali Larner, Development Surveyor
“The programme gives young students an in-depth introduction to the property industry and the wide variety of career opportunities it has to offer. Even if property is not a career path they wish to pursue, the students will all learn something about business generally and how and why large companies operate which will put them in good stead for the future, whatever they do. Hopefully we will enthuse at least one individual to join the industry and perhaps one day become a future leader of a company like Land Securities.” Nick Bates, Development Director
“It was a new and enjoyable programme that introduced us to property development. It allowed me to explore different aspects of designing a building and look in depth at the process of it” Aarushi Karki, Pimlico Academy.
“This programme has allowed me to have an in depth sight of the realm of property development and I hope to apply this knowledge when I enter the world of work”. Alex Simpson-Best, Westminster City School
Ed James, Tutor at Pimlico Academy also commented: “It was particularly exciting for the students to see Victoria’s Land Securities projects at various stages of their development but my highlight was definitely the final presentation where I thought the hard work of the students and the input of their Land Securities mentors really paid dividends.”
